Access to San Francisco/the beach.
If you hate cold, you don't need access to the beach.

I am moving to the bay area as well from Cincinnati , Ohio . I will be working in different areas in Solano county but not sure where to look for nice apartments to rent , in a safe neighborhood. I will working in Vallejo , Fairfield , and vacaville . Please let me know if you have any more suggestion . This has been of a great help and I will keep checking for any more updates .

Hi. Just read through your post, not sure if you have moved or are still looking, but I live in Benicia, CA. My husband drives into OAK or SFO to work and I drive into Vacaville 3x/week. I drive opposite traffic so if you are working in Fairfield this location is perfect. I would never recommend Fairfield to live or Vacaville. My town is about 28,000 people, very quaint, still has the quintessential downtown (think Mayberry) with restaurants, cafes, shops, parks, and water. This town is on the water with beach access and water access. We even have a yacht club, festivals, and lots of stuff going on downtown. A new bar just recently opened up downtown and if you like hip bars - it is very cool. You could look at renting a home or even getting a really nice town home down in the marina where we lived for about 3 years until we moved into our home. We loved being so close to downtown that we actually made sure our home was near downtown. I walk to everything.
If you have kids-the schools are great. We recently have been thinking about moving to the East Coast for my husbands job and I am having angst as to where I can replicate this life.
Benicia is about 35 min from San Francisco, 10-15 min from Walnut Creek, 15min from Fairfield (opposite traffic) which is great. 2 1/2 hours from Tahoe. It sits right on the 680/80/780 change. Check it out. Oh, Vallejo (Don't live there) is about 10min away, you don't even have to get on freeway to get into this city-has ferry access directly into San Francisco as well as all the big box stores and movie theaters.
