I am considering moving to San Francisco to teach Special Education but I have some serious questions about being able to afford to live there. I was told that SFUSD provides some low income housing choices for their teachers and/or rental assistance but I cannot really nail this down from anybody.

Does anyone on this forum know what it is like financially to be a teacher for SFUSD and/or have any information about housing assistance there?

Thank you!

Oh...I am a single mother with 2 teenage boys. So it would just be me.

Well I am not a teacher yet, but I do live in the Bay Area, and can tell you rents in SF are out of this world...! But you could easily work in San Fran, and live in Oakland, Berkeley or Emeryville just across the Bay Bridge. But you would have to factor in transportation costs- it cost between 4-6 dollars for the toll bridge (round trip). If your school gives you a parking lot to park in, you could manage.... Or you could live near the bart (in Oakland or Berkeley) and use public transportation.

my best friend lives in the richmond district of San Francisco and is a SFUSD school teacher. He rents, and is able to make ends meet for himself, his wife, and 2 small children.
