Most of us are not shocked. Crime , including crazy random crime happens in SF all the time. I'd get more into it, but the last time I tried to point this out you accused me of trying to hijack your thread, so I'll just assume you'll work all this out on your own.
Oh good, the "holier than thou" sf-bashing crew has arrived as expected. Glad to see you guys always keep it classy.
If only SF could manage to become a bastion of safety like crime-free SUCKramento and Dallas. You never see random crime in those cesspools, er I mean "utopias." Let's see what headlines come up when I do a quick search with nothing more than "[insert city]" and "crime." I'm sure there won't be anything at all in either of those cities b/c I mean really, who would be a huge enough jackass to talk down their nose about SF's crime situation while favoring either of these two cities? I'm sure no one would be that shameless.
Just for kicks, let's have a look to see how much worse off SF is than these models of safety that are producing SF's critics. Let's start with Suck-town:
Suspect in Sacramento house shooting charged (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2011/04/19/state/n133155D88.DTL - broken link)
Oh whaduya know! 1 dead and 4 injured at a house party on Sunday morning! How could this be??
Well I'm sure that's gotta be the end of it, I mean since this kind of stuff is expected in stinky places like SF but NEVER in Sac. Which of course gives haters from there the right to bash SF for such things. Let's see if there's anything else:
Ouch, strike two! One more dead and another injured when 30 rounds are fired outside of a nightclub also on Sunday. Shucks, I guess Sac's clubs aren't any safer than SF's at this point! Might have to shut 'em all down. Let's try again:
One more dead and another wounded on Thursday in a parking lot! Yikes!! Looks like house parties, clubs and now parking lots are no go's in Whackramento now. This place is sure starting to sound a lot like its not any better off than SF. Sounds like its got plenty of its own share of random crime. Goodness, is there anything else?
2nd Sikh man dies after attack near Sacramento (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2011/04/15/state/n165559D48.DTL - broken link)
Whew! Lucky this one is only the death of a second victim from a vicious hate crime that happened last month. I mean he died this week, but he hadn't been brutally attacked and hospitalized for several weeks now. Good thing Sac is devoid of random crime, huh!
Well I guess technically this despicable hate crime happened just outside of Sac, so it get's a pass there. Too bad the Sac area has crime beyond its urban center's borders. Kind of sounds like the horrendously crime-filled Bay Area that is so bad a Sac resident had to lamely create a thread about it. Good thing he's not hypocritical enough to bash the Bay for crime while hailing from a crime-infested swamp of a city that outdoes Fallujah and Baghdad year in and year out like Chicaaaaaaago. That would really be something if that were the case!
Hmmmm, how's that saying about glass houses go again?
Well I'm sure Dallas will be much better since andy spoke up in here. No way he goes the same route the previous failure went.
Wowsers! A woman sexually assaulted on the side of a road just a few hours after this SF incident, a 6-year-old taken for a ride at 1am while left unattended (by a super-responsible Texan mother) and having his car jacked last night, a school bus with its window getting shot out by a rifle a few days ago, and a car salesman thrown to his death from a vehicle during a test drive the other day! Sounds like Dallas might not be so safe either and might have some crazy people of its own!
Man, triple-digit steam baths, tornadoes, blatant racism, homophobia, the prioritization of guns being legal to carry in your pickup trucks while carrying a joint gets you locked up and doing time, and rampant, out-of-control crime....Dallas sure is a treasure!
Sorry andy, I'll take the western SF fog cooling down the Bay for moderate, perfect weather and clean, fresh air over your backward hillbilly Thunderdome any day of any week! You can keep it! (And most of us wish you simply would so we could all be a lot happier!)
Hmmm. I wonder if it would be less embarrassing and more constructive to simply discuss these issues like adults (assuming you guys actually are even of age yet), instead of pursuing a lame vendetta and acting as though SF's situation is horrendous and unlivable while your preferred crapholes for cities are not any better and in reality are significantly worse. Ever think about NOT being massive hypocrites while passing judgment? Just food for thought.
I lived in NYC for a few years, and later moved to SF.
The Mission is one of those areas that my spidey-senses would go up in regularly. Especially in the evening when the sun went down.
In NYC, I would walk all over the place anytime of day or night, and always felt comfortable.
I agree. Last time I was in NYC I felt fine everywhere I walked in Queens, Manhattan and Brooklyn. But the day I got back here and was at 25th/Mission walking from the ATM my guard went right back up. Actually I was just on 24th about 2 hours ago and had to feel the same thing. That just comes with the territory I guess, but it can get pretty shady at times. I never let my girl walk through that neighborhood alone.

Ignorance is such a widespread problem that it really saddens me. Of the four news link you posted only one incident is in Dallas and thats basically a car theft! All the others are far out in the suburbs. Dallas is almost twice as large as SF in population and DFW metro area has a lot more people than SF-Oakland-Berkeley area. There is a concept of incidents/capita but that may be a little hard for you to understand.
Do you want me to include the daily rampage that goes on in Oakland to describe the crime situation in SF? Because you seem comfortable including incidents that are way out of city of Dallas in the burbs?
Once again you are wrong. SF is indeed a crime infested place with incompetent police and terrible weather. And that's simply the truth!

Absolutely.

Dallas has nearly twice the violent and property crime of San Francisco which is no pacifistic utopia land itself.
Oh, and speaking of horrible, scary, die if you ever wander into it Oakland. Yup, lower crime than Dallas.

I heard about the kidnapping. Glad she managed to get away. Doesn't really surprise me though unfortunately.

i'm just going to remind you that those stats for SF are incorrect as the SFPD was submitting incomplete assault data to the FBI (they left out an average of 1,200 incidents per year).
SF's assault rate on there should be closer to 4.7 incidents per 1,000 residents, and the total violent crime rate should actually be 10.3 per 1,000 people, which is still lower than the 13.6 per 1,000 that Dallas recorded, but not by nearly as much. Also in 2008 SF actually had a higher violent crime rate than Dallas (the stats from that website you linked are from 2004).
My apologies if this has been posted before....but does anyone know of how to look up crime statistics by neighborhood in the bay area (both SF and Oakland)? It will probably be up to Nov/Dec '10 and links police calls/reports.

This site is pretty close to real time (about 24-48 hours behind):
Oakland: Oakland Crimespotting
They also have an SF site too.
Don't forget to put on your density filter. Some "high crime" areas have density around 15k/sq mi vs other areas are closer to 2k/sq mi.
Really? I thought most people on this forum believe SF to be some sort of safe and clean utopia with amazing weather..!
San Francisco is no Idaho, but is not exactly in the same league as Compton or Detroit either when it comes to crime.
