Default NorCal Tornadoes

Seven tornadoes around Chico/Paradise/Oroville tonight, + big hail. Because we don't just do earthquakes, fires, and floods anymore, ya know.

Tornadoes aren't uncommon in the Sacramento Valley.

Kind of reminded me of old home in Iowa. Where they are of course a very familiar part of the spring time experience. Ps. We have had mild earth quakes in Iowa! And south of Iowa. You have the new madrid fault. Last time there was a quake along it. It rang church bells in DC! Cause the energy travals much farther from the epicenter. Than it dos in California. Hence a magnitude five quake in the mid west. Is like a magnitude six or seven quake in California. Thankfully the last time we had a big quake. The only inhabitants were native Americans and fur traders.

I remember getting somewhat used to the term "tornado weather" while living in Sacramento. It wasnt an every day thing, but it wasnt totally unheard of either. The first time I saw such a warning on tv I was surprisd.

I remember looking at the sky and you could see a bunch of funnel clouds at the same time but nothing quite touched the ground. Scary as hell.

a couple months ago:

waterspout at Ocean Beach, in San Francisco:

YouTube - ‪Waterspout (Tornado) @ San Francisco - Ocean Beach‬‏

the same day, a small tornado in Santa Rosa tore a roof off a building: Expert: Tornado hit Santa Rosa | PressDemocrat.com

Tornados are VERY rare in the Bay Area, which made those ones pretty surprising (thankfully i've never heard of any of our rare tornados causing injuries or much damage, as they seem to always be small ones). Here's another video of a small tornado going through South San Francisco in 2005 (skip to 2:00, you can't really see anything before that): YouTube - ‪South City Tornado‬‏

My mom used to refer to tornado or earthquake weather during the overcast skies in the summer. of course we rarely had either. As for tornados they had watches when we lived in DC but never did we have one.

The tornados in Ca are not quite like what we are experiencing here in the mid west and south right now. At least they don't seem to be. I guess anything can happen anywhere, like we have had a bunch of earthquakes this past 6 months. I just smile when people talk about them: enough years in Ca to know the difference between an earthquake and an EARTHQUAKE.

We'd rather not. Got family in Springfield...a bit close to that Joplin tornado for comfort.
