My boyfriend and I are looking into moving to Suisun City, and we are planning to rent a house. We have found a few attractive options in the area just north of route 12, west of Sunset Ave. Can anyone tell us about the safety of this neighborhood? I've researched crime statistics for the area, but would really like an insider's perspective. Neither of us are very familiar with the Suisun City / Fairfield area, and I can't seem to find much info on this board about Suisun City specifically. Thanks in advance!

That's not a bad area, by any means. It's a mix of lower-middle class and middle class folk - very down to earth - right now, real estate is a huge bargain - 3/2s in the low 100s. The housing stock went nuts like much of the rest of the Bay Area housing stock during the height of the market - homes selling between $400-$550k but the area has been battered by the collapse, obviously. Rents are also pretty cheap - the last rental I put someone in there paid $1300 for a 3/2 (home value: $120k - it's definitely cheaper to own than to rent, BUT, if you're just looking for a quiet rental in that price point, I like this neighborhood better than some comparables in Fairfield proper.

There are always people walking around and the park is well-used (on a google map, it'll be fairly ambiguous but it's the Joseph A. Nelson Community Center.)

I don't personally live in that neighborhood, but just a couple of miles away FYI. Two of my favorite restaurants in Fairfield/Suisun are on Sunset.

For Thai, Sukothai on Sunset is absolutely terrific. For Mexican, Taqueria El Farolita is legit. Very much a little hole in the wall joint, but the burritos are fantastic. The nicest thing about that neighborhood is all the food, shopping, etc - even the post office on Merganser, which is by the way, where everyone with any dignity tends to go because the downtown Fairfield post office might rank right up there as one of the worst post offices ever =P But seriously, you've got a Raley's, a Lucky, about a million fast food joints, a handful of hole-in-the-wall ethnic foods, a post office, and you're just a short drive to Suisun City's downtown and Fairfield's downtown (I know both cities don't get the most respect in the world but both downtown's have come a long way in recent years. There's more than a handful of places worth checking out in both, including Fairfield's twilight farmer's market. Hard to ask for a better compact shopping area than that - don't really have to walk or drive far to get most of what you want.

Just as a note, when you say Suisun City north of 12, west of Sunset, I am assuming you're speaking of being south of Railroad and east of Marina also. If you're also talking about being west of Marina, you're also going to be contemplating a part of a Fairfield proper - not that there is anything wrong with that by any means, but north of 12 and west of Marina, say over in the "states" - basically all the up to Travis - is generally less desirable. The housing stock is a older - much of it being early 1960s stock (3/1s) although around downtown Fairfield there are more than a few very old, terrific architecture. But anyway, just wanted to make sure we were on the same page as far as the neighborhood went.

Please feel free to contact if you any random questions about either city.

Here are two online resources offered by the Suisun City Police Department that I would recommend:

Crime statistics for the entire community: Crime Statistics | Suisun City Police Department
Interactive crime mapping, that allows you to see individual incidents by neighborhood or address: Crime Mapping | Suisun City Police Department

If you have specific questions, I'd suggest you call the Police Department at 707-421-7373 and ask for Commander Tim Mattos. He's be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Default Thank you!

Thanks to both of you for your helpful replies. My boyfriend and I ended up finding a place in Vacaville, which we're hoping will be safe enough (it's by the high school--not the safest area of Vacaville, but we're hoping it will work out okay).

Great. I used to live in Vacaville. I'm guessing you're near Will C. Wood? If so, it's a high traffic area but not dangerous. Just not to prettiest place in Vacaville. You'll have a quick walk to WinCo (pretty inexpensive grocery store) and CostCo ($9.99 gets you a pretty formidable pizza). There's also an asian grocery store on the other side of Osh/Starbucks that's worth a look - a lot of good stuff.

Hope you enjoy your stay!
