The original post reminds me of a person who showed up to the Sheirff's claiming he had a run in with a mountain lion... which turned out to be a big house cat.

Have you seen the youtube video of the housecat that chases a black bear up a tree?

According to what law enforcement officals in suburban areas have confided, each year they get a few calls from residents about a cougar prowling their neighborhood. Each time the cougar turns out to be nothing more than a decent sized bobcat. Just how a 25 pound bobcat can be mistaken for a 125 pound cougar remains a mystery.

Yes, I saw several of them. I saw house cats chasing bears around the yard, and up the trees. I saw a vid of 3 chihuahuas in LA area who held a mountain lion stuck in the garage for a while, barking at it.

Here's one of those:

I like this one, of a cat with a pet bear cub:

I saw a video of such "mountain lion"--it was indeed a house cat, but it was feral and it walked kind of like a lion, with an extra bounce... it was lean too--it was at a distance on a hillside and a person misjudged the size of an animal from far away....kind of like in Edgar Poe's story about Dead head butterfly (optical illusion).

There was one case I remember when a person had a violent confrontation with a house type of cat who got into his house.. and claimed that a lion attacked him in his home and he fought the lion off (!)

One time I was camping in North Cal and my campsite was separated from the rest of the camp kind of isolated--there were very few people there anyway--so I started to unpack late when it was dark, though my tent was already up for a while. I saw a pair of eyes that were glowing at me when I directed my flashlight in that direction... something was sitting right by my tent and the animal was big... I couldn't figure if it was a bear or mountain lion, cause it was big--I figured it wasn't a deer, deers just don't behave this way--it was waiting by my tent. It turned out to be a bear who waited to grab some food if I were not watching it well.... that bear had moved away after I made noise, but continued staring at me from the next (empty) campsite from behind the trees. I could see the glowing eyes against my flashlight... as if it wanted contact with me. Later that night the bear brought 2 cubs and they headed right into the camp showers, hoping to find some food, someone saw them marching into the showers, all 3 of them... I had one bear who did sit down and lay down upon my command, like a dog, I could tell that bear could understand human gestures and tone of voice pretty well, just their natural ability... I like to go to apple trees around at certain times, it's a good chance to find a bear sitting in the apple tree, eating apples... just heard of big a dump site where hordes of bears get together, may be I'll check it out this summer.
See documentary about Charlie Russell "The Edge of Eden", btw (bringing up Grizzlie cubs in Kamchatka/Russia), if you can find it. I cried watching it (cause Russian hunters did kill most of the grizzlies he brought up)

I like this one.... that's a grizzly that lives as a part of a family and works in the circus (knowing how the life of a bear in the wild can be, this grizzly has it good):
The bear Stepa (iteresting animal)

Now, this is what I call "Large dangerous animal encounter"... the woman PROBABLY shouldn't be so drunk considering hungry polar bears are running around! (russia again)

Yes I had many encounters with black bears, in fact love to open my tent door and watch them walk around my campsite. If not the law, I'd take up feeding and teaching them tricks.
Most encounters with bears in settled areas are with garbage addicted bears. They are dangerous because they don't fear humans (unlike non addicted, truly wild bears). Ask wildlife officials who have had the sad task of dealing with such animals about this. It's a sad state of affairs.

This was down in LA. That said, will WILL experience the range expansion here as well, and will start to have these types of incidents (and worse):
