Window a/c's work really well in small spaces like bedrooms. However, it almost always cools off in the evening so you really don't need it at night. They don't work so well in living areas with open floor plans. And we have casement windows, which are difficult to fit even if it would work. I actually prefer window a/c since we had it back east - it's nice just to cool off a single room.

When we moved here 2 years ago there was a week long stretch of 90 degree weather in May. I was home all day with a newborn, 3 yo, and 5 yo. I thought I had died and gone to hell. It was over 90 degrees INSIDE my house. In MAY. Crazy.

They're also pretty easy to pop out of an accessible window, meaning you're leaving your house open to potential burglary. Nothing a patrolling dog with an attitude won't solve, but still. That, and it's another strain on the power grid on hot days. Oftentimes a fan will do the trick.

I've been happy for the past week that I sprung for the nice in-law with central A/C and ample insulation. $1450 a month well spent.

Entire thread was a joke. Bottom line is andy and s few others TERRIBLY misrepresented the fog/overcast in SF. It's been sunny all day every day in North Beach save for a couple freak days where it rained. North Beach and Sunset have dramatically different amounts of sunshine. North Beach-as I suspected on these forums a year ago befor I moved here-is a lot sunnier than Hermosa Beach in LA where I moved from.

You contradict yourself in the post. This is the usual weather pattern... Sunset is getting lot of fog everyday but at least it has warmed up to high 50s and 60s. The winter ended in end of June... And most of May-June was terrible with barely any sun.

Yeah...I think you are missing the point. The world..even SF doesn't revolve around you and your physical location. There was sunshine elsewhere in the city.
Just because YOU didn't see it, doesn't mean it does not exist.

Andy - something tells me you wouldn't survive a week in a city (say, in the Midwest, say Chicago) with a REAL winter. Here's a clue...40's and foggy isn't "winter"...it may be dreary and it may be overcast, but it sure as hell isn't winter. Not meaning to be snippy, just trying to provide a little perspective here. I'm sure any other Midwesterners / Northeasterners on here would back me up on this.

Hee. Yes, I giggle to myself every time someone mentions "bad" SF weather. When the weather is "bad" in Chicago that means it can kill you. Extreme heat. Extreme cold. Blizzards. Deep snow. Torrential rain and flooding. Constant cloud-to-ground lightning. Giant hail. Tornados. Strong winds.

Yep. Foggy and cool. I can see the horror!

(Actually, I do sympathize. Having to continually live with conditions you don't like sucks, no matter what anyone else thinks of those conditions... but it's not really "bad" weather in the sense I'm used to the term.)
