I recently moved to west Oakland. And am looking for an *affordable* grocery store. (I know about the green valley foods. Which is way over priced.) That is within four or five blocks of 8th street. Also what is up with that Mandela Foods Cooperative‎ and peoples grocery? Is it a grocery store? Or some kind of organization? I went past the area and saw a sign but did not see a grocery store. Did find a 99 cent store. I searched on Google and found a bunch of names. Seems most are closed or are liquire stores. For some reason. Google maps is really outdated when it comes to things in Oakland. Just be nice if I didn't have to have all my grocery's delivered from Safeway.

The closest one I can think of is in Emeryville but youd have to drive down Mandela Parkway.
3889 San Pablo Avenue, Emeryville, CA 94608 - Google Maps

Otherwise, I know there is talk of FoodsCo(Kroger) building a store right in your area.

There's a Grocery Outlet on Broadway by 30th, it's not West Oakland but it could work if there's a bus you can take, I've never been there though.

For produce, you can go to West Coast Produce on Franklin & 3rd. There's also the Smart & Final on 9th & Broadway which is as close as you'll get to a full grocery store near your part of West Oakland.

Smart & Final rocks.. I go there all the time in San Jose. It's like a Costco without the membership dues or flat-screen TVs.

People's Grocery is a nonprofit that partners with local African-American farmers (I think, but I might be getting them confused with someone else) and/or they have a community garden in a park somewhere to get organic/sustainable produce into West Oakland. I know they have a truck, there is a farmers market on Saturday somewhere on Mandela Parkway and I heard about a store, but I don't know the status. There is also a CSA (community supported agriculture) called Phat Beets that does produce delivery from local farmers too. The closest full service grocery store is definitely the Pack N Save in Emeryville. Also Grocery Outlet is a good place to go. They have a random assortment of groceries and staples, as well as some produce too.

Looks like People's Grocery is about to break ground on a full service store on a site at West Grand and Market: First Lady, Food Deserts & New Fund for Hungry

Mandela Foods on 7th at Mandela Parkway: Mandela Foods Cooperative >> it is a grocery store and organization. The big deal here is it is a worker owned busienss.
Produce Pro on San Pablo at 23rd: Produce Pro - Oakland, CA

I work in the food movement and can clarify a few things.

People's Grocery is not a grocery store. One of the founders left over a year ago to pursue building a grocery store called People's Community Market. He is in the fundraising stage. The two groups are separate. People's Grocery has run a Grub Box CSA program for years -- a produce box focused on serving low-income residents of West Oakland with pick up spots throughout the area. Drop offs are in North Oakland, downtown, and several in West Oakland. Office is at 909 7th Street. Lots more on anti-racism work, campaigns, healthy grocery store advocacy work, etc., at People's Grocery - Healthy food for everyone!. Oh--There is no food truck, but PG used to run one a few years back. A large garden and greenhouse is behind the California Hotel.

Phat Beets is an organization that runs the North Oakland Farmer's Market (5715 Market Street on Sat and by Children's Hospital on Tue), clinical/fresh food programs, education programs, a garden, and their box that serves North Oakland.

Mandela Foods Co-Op (1430 7th Street) is just down from the $.99 store. Go in. They are a great group working, like PG and a few others, to get more healthy food into WOAK. Mandela Foods Cooperative. They are also part of a larger group called Mandela Marketplace.

The other larger group working in West Oakland is City Slicker Farms. The do garden education, run a few large gardens and sell produce to community members that live near their spots.

Message me if you have questions. I do work with all of these folks.
