Redwood City is nice on the west side outside of the 4 block radius around Vera Market and even on the east side the Whipple Ave area is not bad at all although I wouldn't live right on Industrial or right on Arguello. However, the bad part of RWC is pretty bad... I wouldn't recommend anything off of Middlefield Rd or Broadway by Marsh Rd.

As for San Mateo, I would stay out of North Central and Shoreview... there's just enough of a gang factor to make it a lot less livable than west of Downtown.

For a while, I was taking the bus from Redwood City to work in Burlingame. Every day at El Camino & Monte Diablo in San Mateo, 10-15 Mexican laborers would pile onto the bus together.
