Default Where to live around Hayward

23 years old, recent college grad, got a job in Hayward. Wondering where a good place to live with some nightlife and people my age would be. A friend recommended Fremont (?)

Neither Hayward or Fremont are very exciting.

Your best bet for night life would probably be Oakland. It really depends where in Hayward your job is, but for me it's a no-brainer. I'd rather drive a few extra miles to work but live in a much more fun area. If you chose a neighborhood like Grand Lake, you could hop right on I-580 and book it south (it's about a 15-mile drive from the lake to central Hayward).

It would take around 25 minutes to get to Hayward (around 92) from that area of Oakland (I did it for 4 years). A little shorter in the AM, a little longer in the PM.

I'd agree, try Oakland. Fremont and Hayward are both suburbia. And Hayward is ultra crapy suburbia.

There are loads of young people in Oakland and plenty of nice neighborhoods with bars, restaurants, etc.

Thanks for the replies, what neighborhoods in Oakland do you all recommend?

My work at I-880 and Tennyson, would the commute from Oakland be rough?

..if u work in hayward live in fremont. why would u want to deal with the awful commute on 880. there are only like 2 good places to rent in hayward, amador village and avalon. everything else is ghetto.
you're better off living in fremont and commuting for "nightlife".. i'd kill myself if i had to drive on 880 every morning and then again during rush hour.

Probably around Lake Merritt would be good though parking might be tough since it's a lot of apartments. Maybe avoid the areas to the SE and SW of the lake, Cleveland Heights or Adam's Point/Grand Lake should be good. The Dimond District could be ok but might be a bit too sleepy for you. North Oakland is my favorite part of the city (Rockridge, the Temescal, etc) but would add some time to your commute.

To Tennyson? Do you need to be there at 8 or 8:30?

If you need to arrive at 8, it might take 30 minutes. The last 5 miles are the slowest. You could possibly take the streets. But it won't be much longer than 30. The traffic starts to back up around 238 or Winton at about 7:45. If you get there before 7:45 it will be fast. Or after about 8:45. The times in between, it might take 15 minutes for that portion of the ride.
