Sorry, I just had to get that out. I won't expand, so this thread doesn't go off topic lol.

San Francisco is really cold for surfing, visit both cities before deciding.

If you can afford SF, it's a better place and more interesting place to live. This is where your girlfriend might step in with an opinion or two ..... it's more urbane.

San Diego is better by far for weather, and of course for surfing. If paradisaical climate with relentlessly perfect sunny days in the 70s, and nights in the comfortable 50s is to your liking, that's the place to go. It also has far less pollution than LA and fewer earthquakes.

Try out Santa Cruz too as O4kl said, maybe you would like small town life. I'm assuming you'll take another vacation of exploration, do the pavement walk/bike trail that goes from the Boardwalk area out a few miles along the coast to Natural Bridges park. See the main surfing places in action. (I'm sure you can see it also on Youtube). Maybe try the Boardwalk rides if there's still some kid left in you.

The more changeable weather in San Francisco is more to my liking - never really bad, lots of sunshine and clouds and fog mixed up. Plus it's much easier to find a good Linzer torte.

Summary: if surfing is your passion, you will like San Diego better. If civilized living is your girlfriend's passion, she will like San Francisco better.

Ditto. SD beats SF in surfing so if that's your main desire you should go to SD. SF however has more of just about everything else.

Wrong!

San Diego being called liberal in the same sense as SF is idiotic. It has a big bro culture yes but it's proof that it's not a liberal or conservative thing. Also while the air quality in SD is somewhat less than SF, SD is not LA. It's not choking thick.

Where do you people come from???

This is a good summary, although I wouldn't say that SF is better or more interesting, urbane, or civilized than SD.

To the OP, I would offer a word of caution about the different reactions people seem to have to the weather in SF. I would characterize the above description of SF weather as a euphemism. For my tastes, the weather in SF is probably its least desirable characteristic, as I find it to be cold, windy, and foggy about 75% of the time. And the seasons here are very indistinct, if that sort of thing is important to you.

Thank you for your relevant, on-topic, informative post. Rush would be proud. Except for the fact that SD for many is known as a very pro-military town, but that fact doesn't fit your talking points, does it? Largest naval fleet in the world, along with Marine and Coast Guard stations, with 15,000 businesses in SD County relying on DoD contracts. That "anti-gun" enough for ya?

To the OP: Considered Maverick's? Not the easiest thing one can attempt, but quite a story to tell if one can stomach getting up on one of those waves.

Yes, Legal Eagle, most people would certainly prefer San Diego's weather. Even I do, short term. But after a while, it become monotonous to me ..... plus I actually like the breezy, slightly chilly windbreaker kind of weather in San Francisco, with clouds rushing by. Though I wouldn't want to live in the very foggy neighborhoods on the west side.

You obviously haven't spent much time on the beach in SD. During spring and summer, there is a lot of overcast. It's not endless sunshine at the beach. In fact, it is more overcast than the eastern neighborhoods if San Francisco.

Also, in regards to air quality, SD has worse air quality than the beaches of LA county. It's because of wind patterns blowing LA's smog south, but it is what it is.

Unfortunately the surfing on the eastern side of SF is not very good.

Also the "June gloom" prevalent in So Cal during early summer usually burns off by mid-day, unlike the somewhat perpetual fog bank that hovers off of SF.

Point being, if one moves to SD and expects sunny, balmy conditions at the beach they will be disappointed.

Fog has burned off or been non-existant in North Beach much moreso than it ever was in 8 years in living within a mile of the beach in SoCal.
