Hi,

Moved to Foster City from the East Coast recently and one week later my black lab mix tears her ACL completely. I found a vet on yelp and he recommended one but I'm looking for a second opinion. If you have someone you love (or hate) within 30 minutes of me here in Foster City PLEASE share!!!!!

THANK YOU!!!
Sonja & Daisy

Belmont Pet Hospital (aka "BPH") has some surgical experience and capabilities. Can't attest specifically to ACL surgeries so recommend a good screening before deciding who to go with. There are also a couple of others a bit further away - in San Carlos, and the northern part of San Mateo.

I always take my pets to Ivie White Pet Hospital in San Bruno, and would suggest you take a look at them. Welcome to White Ivie Pet Hospital (http://www.pet-hospital.info/index.htm - broken link)

Especially for any complicated surgical procedures, the best (& about the only) option other than UC-Davis is: Sage Centers for Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Care with several Bay Area locations, including one in San Mateo. Usually, you need to be referred to them via your regular vet. They used to be known as Veterinary Medical Specialists & Veterinary Surgical Associates.

I don't just look for a vet practice that can do the operation, I look for a vet practice that does such operations frequently, AND has the staff & equipment on-scene to best handle any potential complications.

Other than them, the vet/practice in SM County that even other local vets will make referrals to for a second opinion or procedures outside their own comfort zone is Dr. Jorgensen at Sequoia Veterinary Hospital in Redwood City: Home (http://sequoiavet.com/default.aspx - broken link) Sequoia also handles regular veterinary services.

One thing to be aware of with San Mateo County veterinary practices: Over the past 5 years or so, many practices in SM county have been bought up by Dr. Kim Haddad. I have nothing particularly negative or positive to say about her, but I *do* wonder why one fairly young vet has decided to build somewhat of a conglomeration instead of just focusing on operating one facility & managing the vets & staff at one location. One seasoned vet who is a part of the Haddad empire did tell me (a couple years ago) did tell me that prices were being raised & follow-up visits pushed in order for this empire to keep growing, and I did clearly see that prices were being raised.

I've heard positive feedback about Sequoia VH.
