A 25% surcharge is, in fact, nothing more that a stealth tax and certainly would no longer be a gratuity. Given the relative high costs of meals in San Francisco, for that rate they'd better be providing a lot more "service" than merely waiting on your table.

I generally tip no less than 15% unless the service is abysmal. For great service I can tip much more.

But a requirement to tip 25% is absurd. Glad you guys agree!

I've seen many people online say that an easy and lazy way to get a lot of hits for an online news article or a web forum is to write anything about tipping, no matter what the content is...

Already we've got some guy from Texas dropping in to chime in about this and 8 posts so far.
Damn, you beat me to it.... and I hadn't even seen the SFGate posting! That was among the laziest written articles I've ever seen, and shame on everyone who didn't bother to read it before commenting.

Why is it. When ever the economy is bad. People are already being run into the poor house. By the high cost of living. That somebody thinks they can add yet another fee or tax? It makes my blood boil! The time to pass a law like this was back during the 1980s. When times were better. Not in the middle of a recession for god sakes. Now a modest rise in tax to provide for the *common good" sure. But when a select group of people. In this case. Waiters. Ask for a special tax which this is. Just to support that one group. It makes me mad as hell! Rest assured. Last time I will ever eat out in San Francisco.

Sounds like a hoax.

Oops your right. It was the 1990s and not the 1980s.

For 25%, I better be dining at the French Laundry (or equivalent), where they wait on me hand and foot.

What is with these people feeling a sense of entitlement for service not earned? They should be lucky we're still dining at their restaurant at all, given the current economy. I can tell you if you add this onto the 4% healthcare surcharge, I'm taking my business outside of SF.

I pretty much always tip 25%.... but we only go to cheap diners with great food and servers who get to know us. Nothing like walking in to our favorite place going to "our table" and finding fresh hot coffee and cream waiting for us..... and a server who knows we don't like onions.
