It's not quite as easy as you make it sound. When workaholism is accepted as the norm, most people's chocies are to leave for somewhere else or to put up with it. Usually, both choices have high costs involved (personal & financial).

Pretentiousness in the Bay Area isn't definied by conventional status symbols (Cars, homes), it is more like status choices:

I eat locally produces food
I shop at Whole Foods
I spent my weekend hiking at Mount Diablo/Marin/Santa Cruz Mountains
I drive a Prius, because I am green
I compost 90% of my trash
I never eat at chain restaurants
I haven't had fast food in 20 years

LOL... these days I get really annoyed if I go somewhere out of SF and I don't find three different kinds of trash cans when I want to throw away something..
