Hi, I am moving to Berkeley soon, and the new place is on Wheeler St/Essex St. I read some comments concerning the safety in South Berkeley. Can someone give me more details about it? When I drove around in day time, the neighborhood seem decent. But some said that west of Telegraph Ave is not safe. I am not going to out alone when it is dark, but I am hoping I can just walk to work (Shattuck Ave/North of Dwight Way). Is there any particular street I should avoid? Thanks!

The area around the Ashby BART station can be dangerous at night, as well as anywhere on Alcatraz Ave west of Telegraph. I would stay above Ashby Ave if you are going west of Tele, and not any further than MLK (South Branch library/Russell Street park).

Thank you for your reply. Is it safe to walk to work (either along Shattuck Ave. or Fulton St)? It's only 20 mins walk, so I am hoping I can walk to work instead of taking the bus. Thanks!

Bike if you can, the buses don't run often enough here and you'd be able to zip past all the grouchy hoodrats standing around on the corner.

Yeah you'll be fine, especially during daylight hours.

I lived on Deakin St & Prince. Word was that they were selling 2 dollar crack rocks down by Flint's BBQ. Lots of car break-ins.....pretty safe during the day...it's been a while.

Use caution at night. Lots of incidents over there.
