That's true, I don't know who lives on the other side of their property - say - where do your parents live?

But, proportionally speaking, by your own admission, a larger percentage of Oakland's land area is ghetto. You said this because you stated that Oakland's ghetto's aren't 3x as violent, if Oakland's ghettos are simply as violent as L.A's, then Oakland needs to have a ghetto to land area ratio that's 3 times greater than L.A's.

Your assumption is that Oakland's ghettos are as violent as LA's to begin with. A larger percentage of Oakland is poor and the poorer areas in Oakland tend to have crime, but not all poor neighborhoods in Oakland are equally murderous. There are five particularly bad areas (in terms of murder) in Oakland - Deep East Oakland, West Oakland, Fruitvale, Seminary and San Antonio - that account for the vast majority of the murders in the city and are the only areas that rival LA ghettos like Compton. The rest of the poorer neighborhoods in the city do not in any way resemble Compton, Watts, East LA, etc. crime-wise. They have higher than average crime, but not the sky-high murder rates.

Rival? 300% higher murder rate, dude, they put L.A's ghetto's to shame.

Not really. They are about the same.

Percentage of Families in Poverty, 2010 Census
Oakland, CA 18.0%
Los Angeles, CA 17.6%

As far as affluence, they area also about the same:

Households Earning $100,000+ Annually, 2010 Census
Oakland, CA 21.9%
Los Angeles, CA 20.8%

Households Earning $200,000+ Annually, 2010 Census
Oakland, CA 6.2%
Los Angeles, CA 5.6%

Median Household Income, 2010 Census
Oakland, CA $49,190
Los Angeles, CA $47,031

Median Family Income, 2010 Census
Oakland, CA $54,625
Los Angeles, CA $51,029

As far as aesthetics, LA and Oakland are very similar in that the place usually either looks ghetto or it looks rich. Even most areas that are considered 'middle class' have a veneer of grit-that is the case in both Oakland and Los Angeles.

However, Downtown Oakland is far more pleasant and liveable in my experience.

If we took a look at LAs most dangerous 56 square miles, that would put Oakland's crime rate to shame. Most definitely.

Just looking at homicide maps, I see 200+ murders in an area of LA that is smaller than Oakland.

Furthermore, I actually like LA a lot but this out-of-pocket Oakland-bashing is unnecessary and uncalled for.

Stop wasting your time arguing with rimmerama. He wouldn't know a rational argument if it jumped up and bit him in the ass.

LA has a huge gang problem (nothing like that exists in Oakland) and it has had its share of riots. Trying to single out Oakland and pointing out its crime problems-when LA has plenty of its own-shows that somebody is suffering from an inferiority complex...

Rational argument? You make crap up and then ignore the facts that rebut your crap. Try again, Kiddo.

So if we took the worst part of l.a and compared it to all of oakland, Oakland would appear safer? Um, o.k.

Pointless argument. The OP asked opinions between SF and LA (not Oakland and LA). And in case, it is highly unlikely the OP will choose to live in ghetto parts of LA or Oakland.

To the OP - Having lived in LA for many years, you can live on the West side and not even know there is a ghetto somewhere.
