San Francisco is lovely in many ways, picturesque, lots of great restaurants and things to do, a decent public transportation system, etc. The thing that has always bothered me is that some of the folks truly do look down on any city or anyone not living in SF. It is true that they are a bit self-centered and self absorbed in their love of SF.

Here is a very specific example. I was at a meeting for parents at a support group I attended when my son was a toddler. I mentioned that I lived in Contra Costa county (in the east bay) and one of the parents literally said to me "I'm sorry". Such an insult! It still burns me up today and this happened several years ago. It can be tough to feel ok just being yourself if you are not ultra PC and ultra liberal and cool to boot. I am a good, responsible person--somewhere between moderate and liberal by anyone's standard, but I am not always comfortable in SF. I feel like a 2nd class citizen for having some traditional views.

The other issue is the great disparity between the haves and the have nots. To own a home in SF you have to be pretty well off and there just doesn't seem to be much of a middle class. That wealth disparity bothers me and I think if you were to do some research, you would find that SF has one of the greatest disparities in wealth in the nations. Makes it tough for families. It really is more of a city for young single people or upper income families.

Let it go - they're just trying to rile you up (like a good number of people in these forums).

One tends to find that many of the stuck up braggarts in SF are recent transplants who figure that's how they're supposed to act. Same thing happens in L.A.

Yeah...totally. Guy from the Midwest or somewhere else...even suburban California moves to the big city, thinks it's the coolest thing ever and becomes the "man about town" acting like he owns the place and everyone else is just some poor sod from the 'burbs with no culture.

Just wait..when said "man about town" grows up a little, gets married, has kids, realizes that he will never be able to buy a house in "his" town, he'll move to Contra Costa County like everyone else and meet nothing but ex-San Franciscans!

And then he'll get a flashy sportscar to hide his insecurities about his pinche manliness, and get a toupee and gold chain, and be the "man-about-a-new-town."

I agree with Howgoesit, it can be very tricky in rating or ranking, there are numerous aspects that go along with giving a fair judgement, some folks put a stronger emphasis on certain qualities, where other's might not, I feel it should come down to what core qualities really makes a city superior to others when it comes down too a matter at hand, once agreed on these traits then I think it would be much easier and fair to rate or rank at the matter at hand.

No surprise, SF and many areas in the Bay Area do offer a great quality of life. The high housing prices and demand for them reflects that.

I use to take vacation from my work over at VAMCSF about five to seven times a year and my co workers and employees at work would ask me;
Are you going anywhere special on your vacation , and I would always answer, Yeah! I going to San Francisco. Living is such a beautiful city who needs to go on vacation elsewhere?
I even got a job offer once to move to Atlanta, and I said what, trade San Francisco for Atlanta? No way Jose! quality of Life don't come cheap but you don't have to spend much to enjoy it if you know how.

Seven vacations per year? Nice work, if you can get it. SF is beautiful and all, but it is only 7x7, and there are so many great places to visit in this state alone. Venture out - The City will still be there (barring another 1906).
