My husband might be acquiring a job at Stanford for a post doc position which is 42K. I work part time (maybe 15K) in retail while my son will be going into Kindergarten. We will be able to survive in Palo Alto on this kind of salary? We would love to rent a 3 bedroom. What are the schools, crime, housing, food, culture like. Right now we live in Madison Wisconsin. I love Madison but I am from Toronto and looking to be a little closer to the action. ANy info would be appreciated.

Frankly Palo Alto is one of the most expensive towns in one of the most expensive parts of the US. It would be tough to find a 1 bedroom affordable on that salary in a town within an hour's drive with good schools. Might be able to do Fremont which is just over the Dumbarton Bridge, check rentals there on Craigslist and see what you find at your budget. Should ask for advice on the San Jose board.

A 3 bedroom is going to run you no less than $2,500 per month, and I'm not sure you could find one for that price.
