Hey Oakland,
Greetings from Baltimore, your former police chief Anthony Batts just became our new Police Commissioner. He was picked over an internal candidate who was more than qualified and would have been great.

He seems intelligent and very well spoken, also after looking him up he seems pretty big on community policing which is something we lack here in Baltimore. What do you guys think of him? The way he left Oakland seemed a little shady!

Also do you believe he's qualified, Baltimore is one of the largest police agencies in the country, is he capable?

Thanks tell me what you think!

Prior to his tenure in Oakland, he was the Chief at the City of Long Beach (Southern California) where he was highly regarded. I don't believe he was as highly regarded in Oakland. I believe he left Oakland as he felt "his hands were tied" when he wanted to make reforms within the department.

To be fair, he had to deal with Jean Quan and her activist/anti-police attitude. I do think he was quicker to accept praise than get his hands dirty in tackling crime and reforming the department, but at the same time, I don't think it's any coincidence both Batts and City Attorney John Russo left not long after Quan became mayor. She and her personal attorney under-minded their efforts with the gang injunction and who knows what else, meanwhile crime (especially murder) continues to rise while the "100 block plan" continues to not be implemented and overall remains a complete mystery, just like Coliseum City and the rest of Quan's half-baked plans.

Yea being a Police Cheif under Jean Quan is a real walk in the park. I mean how could anyone fail under her amazing, stead-fast leadership?

Heh.

Anthony Batts was all show, all talk, was determined to be on tv talking himself up, but was very, VERY paltry and THIN as far as accomplishments. Its hilarious that some think this is all Mayor Quan's fault when it is nothing of the sort.

Anthony Batts' became disenchanted with working in Oakland because he didnt want to deal with Quan's crackwhip City Manager who has cleaned up house quite nicely HENCE OAKLAND HAS A BUDGET SURPLUS.

The article at the beginning of this thread says it all.

1 Totally evacuating town most weekends when the crime rate is at its highest. This is preposterous
What would you suggest? Hiring a second police chief part-time, to cover weekends? What are they supposed to do, work 7 days/week?

How about taking your 'weekend' on days statistics show are less crime ridden?

How about spending more time with the community and city leaders and less time on tv trying to make yourself look good?

He was just another expense we dont need, good riddance.
