CA startup sees entrepreneur-ship as visa solution (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2011/12/16/national/a010118S36.DTL&tsp=1 - broken link)

I guess local tech firms aren't getting enough H1 visas via bribing Congress. Pretty crazy if they are actually serious about this prison ship idea. And at $1200 a pop for room and board it's cheaper than most crappy studio apartments in San Francisco, I wonder if they'd accept Americans? :P

Imagine the start up costs and the sh__ storm it would create (both figuratively and literally). Then, after the first serious high wave event ... lots of them would bail. Even a large ship would bob like a cork when a serious swell is hitting.

I see, a literal take on offshoring. This is thinking wayyy out of the box.

How ironic that we welcome primitive and skill-less illegal immigrants with open arms, do everything we can to give them sanctuary and access to social services, and we shun the intelligent internationals who want a temporary legal alien status so they can realize their ambitions.

With this kind of creative, out -of-the-box thinking, I expect this company will do well. I'm sure part of the reason for anchoring off SF has to do with the milder storms in addition to the proximity to silicone valley.

Interesting idea, but it still sounds like a bit of a pipe dream to me.

This is the nuttiest idea I've ever heard of. If this would be green lighted as a good way to loophole the law, then we should just drop the law altogether and let anyone without regard to work visas.

With the ship anchored offshore, where does the, um, waste get dumped? Suddenly, I'm not looking forward to crab season anymore.

Well, not like anybody swims in the freezing cold water, anyway. Maybe the shellfish will acquire a unique new flavor treasured, um...somewhere.
