Hey all,

I'm from Toronto and I'm taking a 6 day trip to California during the first week of February. My plans are pretty loose, but as it stands right now, I'm flying to San Fran and hanging out for a couple days. Then renting a car and driving along the coast to L.A and staying there for a few days before flying back to Toronto.
I don't really know anyone in those cities, and I've never been. Not sure what to expect or do. I'm also going solo...
also I'm a 26y/o straight male and I'm pretty social, so I'm open to making new friends and checking out the nightlife. Anyone have any suggestions or advice?
I'm pretty excited for this trip and a chance to just get away for a week...

thx

I'd suggest looking at a guidebook or two in addition to reading Tripadvisor.com's California Forum in which your question has been asked and answered many times over.

"Cali"..."San Fran"...

Anyway, use the search function or do some google searches on city-data for topics on this page (it's more user-friendly than the goofy search function here). Here, I searched for "San Francisco trip" for ya.

There's a series of stairways that lead up Telegraph Hill, from Sansome Street...nice walk.

Take the N Judah Streetcar to the last stop, by the ocean. There is (or used to be) a nice little cafe there.

You can visit my favorite Italian place, Cafe Reggio, on Geary at about 2nd avenue.

Want to ride a cable car? Avoid the Powell Street/Fish Wharf horde and take the California Street car from the Embarcadero.

On weekends, MUNI runs a bus to the Marin Headlands. Take it, and hike on up to the Nike missile site. It's on a fog shrouded hilltop...really spooky, a real Cold War artifact. I saw a bobcat up there, once.

If your bedget for lodging is limited, try the Globe Hostel on Folsom. Doesn't look like much, but it's cheap, full of Europeans, and quite safe. A good place for a 26 year old straight male, as many of the Europeans are attractive ladies.

And, on your ride south, don't miss Big Sur. You can tent camp at Pfeiffer State Park.

Cafe Reggio is now a Vietnamese restaurant.

The cafe by the beach is Java Beach, it's a cool little cafe. But unless it's late September or October it will almost always be super windy and cold out there by the beach especially in summer. I was there last August and I wish I'd worn a parka.

The Green Tortoise Hostel in North Beach should also be a good cheap alternative to hotels.
