I’m originally from the South Bay, have lived in NYC for many years, and am now moving back to the Bay Area. I’m looking to rent an apartment in San Mateo so I can be close to work. I won’t have much time to check out the area.

I have a medium sized dog, so the apt. must be dog friendly.

I’ve checked reviews on apartments on Yelp and apartmentratings.com. They all seem abysmal. Is it really that bad? Coming from Queens, will the area east of the train seem “dangerous”?

These are the buildings that have apartments for rent

Archstone (Park Place between David Street and Wayne Way- just West of 101)
City South (La Selva St, near S. Norfolk- just east of 101)
Scotchallow (Laurie Meadows Drive- between El Camino and 101)
Hillsdale Gardens (next to the mall)
Creekside Apartments (3rd Ave. between S. Norfolk and Seal Point Park)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It has been years since I have been to San Mateo, and even then I have only seen the downtown.

I can only speak about the Archstone. For the record, I'm not affiliated with it in any way. In terms of safety and convenience it is fine. It's somewhat pricey, but without obvious alternatives, it's a decent bet. They tend to hike the price to unreal levels after the lease is up, so be prepared to move. One apartment complex that's not on your list is Metropolitan, close to downtown.
Area "east of the train" should not be a problem coming from Queens. It varies north-to-south, but generally is pretty safe.

Eastside has some gang issues (Norteno - Sureno conflict and to a lesser extent MS13; seems the Tongan Crips are less active these days, I think the hard core boyz are now in EPA instead of San Mateo).

There are number of apartments around Laurelwood shopping center (92 & W Hillsdale Blvd).

They are small, but the area around is very good. Laurelwood park is in few minutes walk.
