Cost of living is obviously tough in SF/Bay Area. I moved back to NY for personal reasons (originally from NY, lived in the Bay Area from 1999-2006, got divorced in 2006, and moved back east to be with family). I hate being in NY and miss SF every day. I go back to SF every 2 years for a weeks vacation, and I'm only truly happy during that week.

I plan on retiring eventually back in the Bay Area. My parents are getting up there in age (76), and I don't feel good moving back while they are still alive. Honestly, I hope I'm stuck in NY another 20 years, because I love my parents dearly. But I will move back.

Agreed, NYC is just as bad.

When I lived in the Bay Area, I lived in the East Bay (Walnut Creek). In NY, I live right over the Queens border on Long Island. Both very comparable pricewise for rent and general cost of living. Same thing if you live in "the city" which in the Bay Area means San Francisco, and in NYC people are usually referring to Manhattan. San Francisco and Manhattan are very comparable when it comes to cost of living. Also, housing in the nicest parts of both cities costs similar amounts. So the cost of living, if you want to live in "the city" is tough in both areas.
