This kind of stuff happens in every city that performs very well economically, the poor and middle class have to move further way and their commute grows longer -- I don't think this is particularly cruel.
Since when does city = affluent person's playground. It's supposed to be the center of commerce, and a magnent for people to try to succeed. But cities will die if it is impossible for a variety of people to live there.

What's frightening is how many of the affluent/yuppies feel that this is absolutely OK for this process of middle class extinction to continue. It is like laying a mine field for the foundation of own house. Many younger ones do not even fully comprehend what is happening. One has to think about things like: "One nation..."--? This is definitely vanishing.

If expelling the middle class and lower-income people from the area is OK... and nothing HAS to be just, or moral... one may ask: is civil war OK? Is tearing the country into pieces and forming several countries is OK? What else will be ok...Is taking someone else's property by force is OK? If it's wrong--why would it be wrong at all? If its going to be wolf eat wolf and the rule of the strongest, and "winner takes it all"... the country will have no moral foundations or unifying forces (while ethnic bonds are absent, due to US being multi-ethnic and mixed)... such countries tend to fall.

I have found this to be true. Prices for places I looked at in January/February 2011 have gone up hundreds of dollars a month (~200-400 depending on area and starting rent in 2011). The areas of town I'm making these comparisons are: SOMA/South Beach, the Mission, North Beach; although I'm sure the general trend is holding true in most/all SF neighborhoods.

The market in SF (and the bay area) is definitely getting more expensive, and doing so quite quickly.

This is also true in the South Bay.
