Granted, I work in a science lab at Stanford, but people here just dress more casually at work.
You don't happen to know anyone in Stanford's athletic department, do you? I'm graduating from college next year, and looking to intern at Stanford either this Summer or sometime next year.

Don't mind her, most Californians are nice.
Yeah, but at least I'm not stupid and naive enough to defend the newest troll.

Gee, can I wear leather around all the white, affluent, desirable people like me in the Marina? Will the undesirable black or Hispanics be too close for comfort? Will people talk to me if I decide to wear jeans or cargo pants to a restaurant? lol...

It's a CITY with 900k people. You shouldn't be moving to a big, metropolitan CITY if you need to ask something so dumb about what to wear unless it's related to the temperature.

You can wear anything you like. I purposely go "anti-Hipster" just to make them cringe as I stomp around the streets of my home town.

Mom told me that grandma wore a smart dress, heels, hat and even gloves to go to the Safeway (just in case she ran into someone she knew). Of course this was San Francisco in the 1950s...

But you might run into someone who's not white. Life is difficult.

I worked in the financial district during the "Gordon Gecko" era and it was pretty formal. Even today you'll see plenty of well-dressed there. Everything else is fair game.

Since your from NY, you know about good shoes. Lots of walking in San Fran. I used to wear a black dress boot that was still formal enough for a suit but could survive the hills and rain. The new kid transplants would show up in those shiny wingtips. They lasted about a week.
