Is the Pak n Save in Emeryville still there? I shopped there several times on extended business trips a few years ago. Did it used to be an Albertsons? When did it open? I wish we could have more stores like that here in Philadelphia.

Yep -- still there. Never was an Albertsons. Pak n Save is a Safeway subsidiary, and that store was built as a Pak n Save.

It was built around 1992 or so. It is being remodeled into a "Pak N Save by Safeway" with much nicer interiors. That place has always been a blighted eyesore, and it's the dumpiest grocery store in the area. Most people living in Emeryville don't like going there because of the crime and homeless people. Plus, you're paying the exact same high prices as a nice, full service Safeway, except you have to bag your own groceries. So you don't "save" anything.

So why on Earth would you wish you had a place like that in Philly??
