Anyone have suggestions on where to take an affordable, last minute, two night vacation (that doesn't involve snow) with two kids this time of year? We're willing to drive 2.5 to 3 hours outside the bay area... TIA for suggestions!

What's "affordable"? How old are the kids?

Our standby trip with kids was always Montery. For just adults it was Napa.

By "affordable," I mean under $1k for two nights... The kids are 4 & 10.

We've been to Monteray before, and it was a great trip, but we're hoping for something new this time...

Camping by the coast is always fun and not so cold if there's no rain in the forecast (Pfeiffer State Park, Pismo Dunes).

Sierra Foothills along highway 49. Lots of history. Maybe work from Auburn South to Placerville. Or Jackson to Sonora.

I think your kids would enjoy Pismo Beach. You can rent a dune buggy and drive on the sand dunes. I'm sure your kids would remember that trip for awhile if they were anything like me growing up lol. You could even drive to Santa Cruz for 1 night, play at the boardwalk then drive to Monterey to see the aquarium then continue down highway 1 to Pismo Beach to stay the night, then take 101 back.

Bodega Bay, Fort Bragg and Yosemite if you are willing to drive a bit further away.

Sacramento? You could do the whole "history tour" go to the capital, visit Old Sacramento and visit the railroad museum. You could even take the train.

(I was a kid who loved doing city tour stuff....going on tours..etc...)
