My parents want to move to be closer to us (we live in Fremont) so I was wondering if you all can recommend any places that are relatively affordable (LOL) and within 1.5 hours of Fremont. It should be near excellent hospitals, too. How about Livermore?

It would be great if it's close to a VA hospital, since my dad works for the VA system.

Livermore is a great town but still expensive, at least for us. Patterson is very inexpensive but much further away. It might be helpful to know your budget. If you live in Fremont, you probably know to avoid some of the towns near Sacratmento which have gang/drug issues.

Keep us posted as we are also looking for a place to retire in this area that has a reasonable cost of living, but I don't think it exists.

I'm thinking in the 300's (max) for a small ranch - the area must be safe and clean. They come from a nice area in North Carolina, so it is going to be a huge adjustment!

I was hoping for something closer than Sacramento. They do have friends in Tracy, so that might be an option (though I would prefer Livermore or surrounding areas as it's closer to us).

You are definitely right about it being a big adjustment if coming from North Carolina. What city will they be moving from?

How about Woodbridge in Manteca? Woodbridge | Active Adult Community Manteca CA | Del Webb homes

A Del Webb community with pool, golf, etc. and reasonably priced homes.

They are coming from the Triad area (Winston-Salem). Let me put it this way - they live in a large updated ranch with full walkout basement in a pretty decent area, and their house will sell for under $300K in the current economic climate.

Thanks so much for the ideas thus far! I am taking notes

Is anyone familiar with Rossmoor in Walnut Creek? That appears to be an active senior community and seems doable, but I'm sure there is a big HOA payment.

I just checked out Manteca online. They have good friends in Tracy and Modesto so I think that would be a good location, and it's about an hour and 15 minutes from us (as long as it's not during rush hour!) and seems affordable. Thanks for the recommendation!

If you don't mind going further than 1.5 hours, you could look in Lincoln. My father-in-law recently moved there and there are a couple of very nice retirement communities in town. The developments are almost towns unto themselves and have lots of ammenities. Check out Sun City Lincoln Hills Community Association.
