Hello--

We're headed from Oakland to Manchester, CA (near Mendocino) this weekend and looking at itinerary options. I've narrowed it down to two. Both of these drives look great - we love both coast views and tree/vineyard drives. We're leaving Oakland around 9:00 and can check in to our spot starting at 4:00.

Any compelling reasons to pick one of these routes or the other (or something different?

Thanks!

Coastal:
Oakland up past Petaluma and then over to Bodega Bay.
Lunch in or near Bodega Bay.
Visit Gualala to see town, art center, views
Coastal stops for views along the way up to Manchester

101/128 Route

Oakland up through Healdsburg
Take 128 at Cloverdale
Stop at some wineries in/near Philo
Take 128 up to the 1 (we keep hearing it's a great drive)
Take 1 South to Manchester area.

Keep in mind the Bay Bridge will be closed all weekend so probably until you get into northern wine country there will be a lot of traffic from people going around to other bridges.

Dry Creek Road from Haealdsburg to Sea Ranch and up 1 is a great route. There are a ton of wineries before Lake Sonoma and then, after the dam, it is extrememly rural. I think the entire route I only passed a few cars coming the opposite direction. You finish the road in a beautiful valley and towering redwoods. The road is curvey and sometimes one lane, but defintely worthwhile.

I haven't done 128, so can't comment. The road to Bodega Bay will be the busiest and I am not the biggest fan of tourists, so I would avoid that road and town altogether. Although, it would be your quickest/most efficient route to 1 from 101 if coming from Oakland going north.

128 is an absolutely beautiful drive through the redwoods. Personally, I would make a big loop. I wouldn't budget too much time for Gualala. Not much there.
