oakland sucks they need to move to san jose already. good or bad the team in oakland averages like 20 fans per game. its a joke. the area around the coliseum is a dump. nothing to do around there except get mugged. move to san jose if you want people in the seats. stay in oakland if you're good with 5k fans per game

Clearly you are really young, have a bad memory, or are some biased Midgets fan. The A's averaged 2.9 million fans in 1990 and has many years in the late 80's/early 90's and early 2000's of over 2 million per year. The Giants never saw 2.9 million fans fill Candlestick while they were there ever. The A's have 11 seasons at the Coliseum where they exceeded 2 million fans per year while the Giants only at 3 at Candlestick. Build a new stadium and provide a decent team and they will come as they have in the past.

also baseball is no longer the popular sport it once was. look at highlights of games on espn and you will notice that in most stadiums the stands are half empty. with the notable exception of a few newer stadiums that were built considerably smaller than the ones they were replacing. even the proposed A's stadium would only seat something like 20K people. In the 80s a stadium that small for any team would have been unheard of. The A's do need a new venue, but that venue should be in Oakland, and along with it new owners.

Because that blog is run by one of the LGO zealots, hence the extreme headline. They disregard all neutral fans (from neither Oakland or SJ) who prefer a move to the south bay, and ignore any and all holes in the plans proposed by Quan, Knauss, Boxer, etc. It's almost like a cult in which the leaders are infallible, so why bother questioning them when they flip flop on their proposed site twice within a few months. They even applaud the Giants for upholding territorial rights and influencing Quan's plans, as if they really have the best interest of the A's or Oakland at heart. It would be funny if it weren't so frustrating.

And no, I don't have a problem with their goal or their passion, just their logic and debate skills.

Two million really isn't that much, just an arbitrary number. Three million has traditionally been the benchmark for success. In reality, the A's have met or exceeded American League average attendance only 8 times in 44 years. Comparing them to the Giants of last century is pointless, because the Giants have established themselves as the more popular team for over a decade now, picking up many of the casuals who stayed away from the Coliseum and Candlestick.

Well I was looking more at the source of their information than the actual blog. It's still a lot of talk but plenty of big names and deep pockets are for the A's staying in Oakland, but of course that may not be enough.

What is your point? Are you trying to say the A's past attendance numbers don't warrant a new stadium being built in Oakland? I think it's absolute BS that detractors try to bring up the CURRENT attendance woes of the A's as a reason to leave Oakland.

Baseball attendance in cyclical. The A's, as well as many other teams like the Giants, have had attendance go up and down throughout the decades. There is no GOOD reason to believe the A's can't draw a good sized crowd again. The Giants have only exceeded the average NL attendance 10 times before Pac Bell and 9 of those times were before the A's even arrived in the Bay Area.

You say I shouldn't mention that because the Giants have expanded their fanbase since moving to Pac Bell. Well you must give Bay Area baseball fans far more credit for loyalty than I do. No other two team market has nearly as many people that support both teams, many of those would easily attend a new A's ballpark imo. Many of those Giants "fans" are fairly casual as well. You still see people wearing those stupid split A's/Giants caps and no other two team market has ever sold something so ridiculous. Build a new ballpark that is cheaper and easier to get to than Pac Bell with a winning team and the A's can fill a new ballpark imo. Sure they may not be the Top 10 in attendance but plenty of teams that have had new stadiums built aren't either. The A's could easily draw as many people as San Diego, Miami, Washington, Pittsburgh, etc..which all have fairly new ballparks. Petco Park is both new and very affordable compared to Pac Bell, if the A's built something similar I think plenty of people in the East Bay would attend. Not saying the A's will draw as many fans as the Giants but they've outdrawn them before in the 70's and late 80's/early 90's so I don't see why they couldn't again given the right situation. Many baseball fans here aren't exactly hardcore about being loyal to just one team.

Obvously, he's never been to a game if he think A's games are dangerous.

I've had issues a couple times when parking on E.12th/SL Blvd or going to the nearby gas station, but the actual parking lot & BART lot are as safe as anywhere else in the Bay Area.
