Hello All,
Well after years of talking about moving from Philadelphia I am finally doing it. I just accepted a job in downtown San Francisco. I am very excited but after 72 hours of apartment/sublet searching I am very nervous. I really need just a nice, safe studio (or a room with kitchen privileges) for three to six months.

My husband will not join me in SF for 3 to 6 months so I just want a place where I can devote all my time to learning my new job and unwind on weekends.

So I have found some not-so-expensive "long term executive hotels" but when I read their web reviews they sound awful (and unsafe). Then there are nice things out there but they want $5k/mth for rent (that includes all utilities). My price range would be half that.

I have looked at some 1 bedrooms in Sausalito but haven't gotten any responses. It's hard doing this from the east coast.

When I considered moving to NYC there were sources like spareroom.org and sublet.com . . .does anyone here have any suggestions? My firm will pay for one month of corporate living (and still I would never let them pay$5K either!!!).

I am feeling a bit overwhelmed. House hunting is dampening my enthusiasm. And I know, I know .. .it's been said so many times: "SF is one of the most expensive cities in the world." This offer came to me and I did not have SF on my radar. Now I am at a loss. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Oh, I did try AIRBNB.com and there are some good leads but they're quite expensive as well. Downtown units on that site are about $3k to $4k a month.

Here's the goal:
  • A nice comfy place within commuting distance to work for ~6 months.
  • Husband would be allowed to stay with me two or three weekends per month.
If we liked the place and it would work we'd remain after Husband arrives in SF for a few more months while we searched for more permanent place - together.

Is your downtown San Francisco job close to a BART station? (bart.gov has the system map) If so, you could choose a temporary place next to a BART station in the suburbs, where prices are likelier to be lower.

Sausalito is one of the most expensive towns in Marin County. Golden Gate Transit runs weekday express bus service from other Marin cities. Here's the link to the bus schedule line-up:

... or you could call them at 415-455-2000.

In your shoes, I'd much rather commute downtown via BART than on any Golden Gate Transit line ... but you're thinking of Marin, so I thought I should offer the link. Good luck.
