Question 19 year old in Sonoma county?

Maybe someone can help me with some thought on this? I have yet another job opportunity in Sonoma County with the Coast Guard. Pay is so so for the area. I have a son, 19 years old. Never in any real trouble because he is able to stay busy with fishing and volunteer fire fighting. He doesn't have a car. Probably won't for a while. Hes somewhat/mildly disabled. I'm a little scared of Sonoma County. Reason being, my impression is there's not much going on for a kid like him especially with no transportation. Wine tasting, dining, high brow activities are my impression of Sonoma so far.
Without much to occupy him I'm afraid he might be in turmoil and myself as well.
Would anyone care to disagree?

Did you get this idea from actually visiting Sonoma County? I lived there for 23 years and the area has many different aspects; you can find anything you want, basically. Santa Rosa/ Sebastopol area has a good concentration of disability services, and depending on where you would choose to live, it seems to me that your son could find outlets for his fishing and volunteer fire fighting.

If you haven't visited here, I'd come and do that before making any decisions against Sonoma County. You already have a job offer and that's the single biggest hurdle to overcome. It's a really lovely county.

Thank you that's good to hear. I have never been that far north. Scouting with my own eyes isn't an option financially to be honest so it's a do or die mission. But if it's not too terribly rural we should be ok. Thanks for your thoughts

Default Sonoma County Misconception

Thank you Macrina for your post. Sonoma County is porobably the most diverse and accepting place I've ever lived....hoyty-toyty???Never! Just
a great place to call home. Community (?), absolutely. Something for everyone.

Diverse as in what? There are a wide range of personalities and different kind of jobs, if you're talking in terms of multiculturalism or different ethnic backgrounds, I don't think it's really that diverse. But I'd say it's accepting. Sonoma County is definitely scenic in many places, and has great weather. I've lived here all my nearly 19 years of life.

I'm with Macrina on this one. Certainly many people get the town of Sonoma and the COUNTY of Sonoma confused with the hoity toity type wine country PR that Sonoma the town puts out, it's a common mistake.
Sonoma County is so much more than the one tiny town it's named after. Transportation from the Coast Guard may be a bit tricky, if you'll be living right there, it's about 10 miles outside of downtown West Petaluma.
But otherwise, I think your being afraid of Sonoma County is unnecessary. Come up and visit first if you can, you'll see!
