There's been plenty of research, and recent research has stated that casual marijuana use has little to no negative effects on the lungs:

Pot smoking not so harmful to lungs, study finds

But if there's a reason it hasn't yet been "fully researched", its due largely to federal agencies stifling requests by research institutions for legal access to the plant to perform their research.

After all, on this issue the truth is very dangerous to the thousands of bureaucrats that make their living fighting non-violent marijuana offenders.

God, sometimes I feel like I live in 1984.

And besides, if someone is dying of cancer and they want to torch their lungs, why on earth do you care? And even if they are completely healthy, and they want to smoke in the privacy of their home, why on earth do you care?

Well, yeah, everyone knows that. And weed sellers are involved in a lot of money laundering and black market drug buying...because it's illegal, which causes all kinds of crime, look at what prohibition did to the US...weed is not worth the cost of banning it at all. With deadly stuff like heroin and crack you can make the argument, but weed? Nah.

Why stop with MJ? People are going to do crack/heroin/meth regardless of legality, so why not just move to a regulated drug model that focuses on harm reduction and treatment for addicts since they're the ones with the problem anyway.

For the exact same reasons that 'abstinence only' sex ed programs fail to work, trying to protect people from themselves doesn't work either.

I really don't see why this is so difficult to understand...

That's what they do in Portugal, they decided to treat it as a public health issue instead of a super-costly law enforcement issue and it's worked out well for them.

This is an issue where the Teabaggers need to listen to the real Libertarians. But they won't, cuz their churches and PTA would have a fit. Especially if we dare treat chronic drug use as a health problem.

We don't need none of that lib guvmnt health care crap, mkay?

Obama is going to do what ever his corporate sponsors (in this case the pharmies) tell him to do. You would have to be brain dead (never mind stoned) not to see this.

The people cheering the loudest over the Feds coming down on the State sanctioned dispenseries are the illegal sellers, growers and Mexican drug cartels.
