They patrol all night and ignore absolutely everything that happens. What is the point?

I've heard that complaint before (applied to any busy area of the city). Seems they accept a certain degree of lawlessness/misbehavior vs. hauling them in and doing the paperwork. Kind of a shame - I don't think Bloomberg would tolerate that in Manhattan.

Yeah, it's more like they look the other way for minor things. I've been in Civic Center and literally seen a guy taking a hot dump on the escalator to BART, and the BART Cops simply called out the cleaning crew over the intercom as the homeless guy walked away. They didn't even attempt to chase him.

I agree with everyone, it's a shame. The drugs and alcohol are what I think they need to crack down on especially because it gives them no chance to return sane or self-sufficient. It also causes the behavior to take a dump in a public area instead of finding somewhere more private, less invasive.

I think the idea is it is better to have one open air vice area, rather than let it spread and proliferate around the city. You keep the loin the loin and you keep it contained. What you see is what you get.

The SF idea is to corrall the down-on-their-luck/sketchy crowd into one identifiable area, called the Tenderloin, so the yuppies can take over the rest of the city without fear of losing their iPhones or Guccis.

Yep. And the police make sure it isn't actually a very violent place. Probably help out the occasional lost tourist, too.

To be honest I think they just patrol because they are ordered too. I am a night owl and I was all over the loin and polk last night. Crackheads everywhere. Prostitutes everywhere. No secrecy. No attempt to hide anything. And the 10 cop cars I saw from 4-6 didn't stop once despite all this happening in front of them.

Better than having the sketchballs hanging around your front door. How would you feel if you payed 2000 a month for a one bedroom, you come outside and some one is taking a dookie on your stoop? You don't want that. You want that person doing that in an ally in the loin where they belong.

Therefore, you don't live in a town that's so outrageously expensive and is crawling with crackheads and prostitutes.
