Hello,

My roommate and I will be moving to the Bay Area in July from NYC and need some advice. I am looking for a 2BR/2BA in an apartment community 2600/mo being our max. We need to be close to SFO (for work) and were looking around San Mateo county. We saw Archstone South Francisco and it seemed nice. Does anybody have a experiences with Archstone or specifically the South San Francisco one? Also are there any other nice apartment communities that we should look at in San Mateo county. Thanks for all your help!

I had a friend of mine who lived there for a while. The place is pretty nice, but I thought he was way overpaying. Then again, he worked for United so needed to be steps away from BART.

Many reviews here: Archstone South San Francisco - South San Francisco, CA
and here: Archstone South San Francisco Ratings, Reviews, Map, Rents, and other South San Francisco apartments for rent from ApartmentRatings.com

$2600 sounds a bit rich for SSF ... for that price, I'd look in Foster City/Redwood Shores unless you need to be right next to SFO.

Rent price has gone up for convenient locations with better transportation options more than better neighborhoods. For example, in my apartment hunting, I found that Emeryville is now more expensive than Albany (I think it is because Albany is too far north). Oakland uptown and part of Lake Merritt area more expensive than the hills and Alameda. Even for myself a convenient location is more important so I'll just have to suck it. If you look at such apartment complexes next to the three BART stations of SSF (Archstone), Colma (La Terraza) and Daly City (88 Hillside), they are pretty much of the same price. Places such as Pacifica, Alameda which are considered better neighborhoods are not expensive at all. In Alameda it is easy to find a 2 bedroom for under 2000$, most likely around 1600$.

It's hard to fault the convenience. Walk to Costco, Trader Joe's and BART. It's not the most private location with people walking around your home all the time on their way somewhere. I've also heard so-so things about their management, and I believe they are required to rent some of their units to low-income Section 8 tenants as well.

Have driven by the SSF Archstone and it looks nice from the outside. There's a Trader Joes, Starbucks there and the complex is next to the BART station.

There is also an Archstone apt complex in San Bruno (closer to the airport). Across the street (El Camino Real) from it, there is a BART station and the Tanforan mall. Easy access to I-380.

Archstone is HORRIBLE. Please do yourself a favor and never rent from one. Those bad reviews are true.
