If you work near Grand Central then you're good, but otherwise you have a trek. Having to transfer to another train to get to work sucks, even if the trains are frequent you still have to get off one train, go down a bunch of stairs, get on the other train, go from A to B, get off, go up the stairs, etc. On BART you just stay on one train and you have a few station options available. Not everyone in downtown SF works near Market Street, but a large percentage does.

Not really. It is still doing the best of the Bay Area transit systems. Ridership fell a bit during the downturn, but they found money to upgrade cars and the have had a few budget surpluses over the past 2 years.
