What's wrong with Detroit? The bias supporters will tell you that Detroit is an up and coming city with plenty of artsy things to do, and has many options for dive bars and restaurants. It's a vibrant city full of life and potentials. It gets a bad reputation from the media. Sounds familiar eh?

Its like city leaders dont want to do this cuz its not sexy. the bay area already has a hot girl, and a smart girl, we need one that can actually do work now.
Problem is, nothing is made in USA anymore. Unless a bunch of people want to work for $2.00/day and no benefits.

Never been to Detroit, but a good friend of mine is. For the people who are from the suburbs of Detroit, it is a lovely place and they never have to venture into the city at all.

For people who grew up in poor areas of Detroit (like my friend), it is a hell hole and there is no need to ever visit.

Bad neighborhoods in Detroit are far worse than bad areas of Oakland since they are completly devoid of investment and resources. It leaves you hopeless and forlorn, and these areas make up much larger pockets of the city. In Oakland those types of areas are few, and not as bad (i.e burning cars and burning buildings nightly). Plenty of the bad neighborhoods in Oakland still feel like communities. They have stores, shops, restaurants, and neighbors that care about each other mixed with bad seeds. There is also quite a bit of new development in east Oakland.

Detroit is also the only metro area for miles around....so there isn't a "center" of industry that is doing well in the metro area. Oakland is one of the main cities in a thriving metro area, so it has a lot more access to capital, development and key influencers. Even if they are in other nearby cities.

Detroit is quite literally more divided into haves and have nots. And the have nots are more like have nothings, not have a littles.

What Oakland and Detroit have in common: in tact historical architecture downtown, burgeoning trendy downtown scenes, new development and investment in their urban cores, and a rash of young people (entrepreneurs, non-profit workers, job creators, young professionals) excited and focused on improving the city.

But you've never been to Detroit?

Hmm, interesting. Isn't this the angle that a lot of Oaklanders claim about "outsiders" with regards to Oakland so disdainfully, and why their opinions don't count? Because they don't even live in Oakland, yet have an opinion on the city. Seems like a double standard, but continue talking and making judgements about a city you've never been to based solely on third party opinion.

Yes and no. There is a big movement to producing things in the US. ANd many of the so-called artisan products can be made in the US while still maintaining profit margins.

Oakland has been capitalizing on this by courting the food businesses (Hodo Soy, Revolution Food, Blue Bottle Coffee, Numi Tea).
