I've been over on the NYC board and am astonished at how they apparently have rats running wild through their streets and subway system. In 10 years of living in California (LA, SF) I've never once seen a rat or roaches. Have I been really lucky? Or, as I suspect, is the rat problem in NYC not really existent on the west coast?

Color me uncertain as to what was so funny. That I'd ask if anybody has ever seen a rat because you presume people see them all the time? That I do not like rats and thus do not want to see them? I don't get it.

I don't know about San Francisco but my relatives in Mountain View had them. They used to eat the ripe plums off the trees.

Your relatives or the rats?

I don't know of any wharf areas that don't have rats. Wharf rats.

NYC has a lot more underground development, with the subway and different levels of basements in most buildings. There's as many rats here as there, it's just easier to see them in NYC.

Yes, we have rats in the City...and roaches also. I once saw a huge one (much larger than a chihuahua) walking along the gutter on Fillmore/California. I don't recall seeing them very often though.

I also had a good friend plagued by them in his old apt on Jones St. They'd actually crawl onto his bed after he turned the lights out (ewww).

I've lived in North Beach for a little over a year and have never seen them. I've walked through Chinatown late at night and haven't seen them either (though I was typically drunk and not looking lol).
