Yes if the OP walks in a slim corridor between the apartments on 500 Williams, and the 19th street BART station, he'll be safe, as long as the guys who committed an armed robbery 500 yards away don't decide to move their operation to that corridor. Then of course, all bets are off.

Totally safe. I walk around that area late at night all the time. Safer there than 6th and Market in SF.

I'd rather walk alone at night in Downtown Oakland than Downtown SF, no question. I haven't been to all that many cities, so I imagine I'd place NYC and Chicago ahead of DTO since they have more people walking around.

Where I have been in Downtown SJ is hit or miss, so it is probably a toss up. But if you were to look at crime stats for Downtown Oakland and other cities, you'd find Oakland's to be pretty quiet. No one is masking anything.

Most worrisome? The Uptown Apartment management. A friend of a friend had their rent increase by 40% after the end of their one year lease......

And there is a lot of drama with the parking situation there.

That's not the question though. I don't remember anyone asking "Is Downtown Oakland as dangerous as Downtown Oakland"? That is masking the point.

Downtown Oakland is rough, and the crime stats show that.
