Our move to SF has been delayed a little bit, and so we're still considering different living scenarios.

The Richmond district, while cold/foggy/remote, seems like it might make sense as a place to live (rental) if your job is in Moss Beach and you're commuting by car. What do you guys think? We're looking at the Outer Richmond, where we could get a little more space for our money. We figure we can always move closer to downtown SF in the future.

What does the Outer Richmond have in terms of stores, restaurants, etc.? It's not my first choice of 'hood, but it does appeal because it seems like it would be a manageable commute to work. And also rental prices are slightly more reasonable by SF standards.

I actually don't think it's that "remote" since there's a lot of tourist activity/cyclists along Ocean Beach. There's plenty of restaurants/shops/some bars on Balboa, Clement, California, on Geary Blvd depending on how far out toward the ocean you are. There's a big Safeway shopping center nearby on La Playa as well and I think there's a Fresh and Easy store on Clement with a lot more choice in restaurants.

It seems like a good option..probably about 40 minutes drive along the coast to your work.

I'd look at Pacifica, it's closer and should be cheaper than pretty much anywhere in SF. The Outer Richmond is ok but pretty desolate and quiet by SF standards, but there's still stuff there. But it's still really expensive considering how foggy and remote it is. If you just have to live in San Francisco I'd look at the Outer Sunset too, it's not that different from the Richmond and is that much closer to Moss Beach. Might be cheaper than the Richmond especially in the SW corner. It's still super foggy and remote and doesn't have as much in the way of bars/restaurants/shopping and still expensive considering what you get, just like the Outer Richmond.

I haven't been to Pacifica before, but can see from the map that it would be closer to this job. Could you tell me a bit about that city -- pros/cons? Thanks.

well, most everything west of Hwy 1 is falling into the Pacific. I'd look for a place on the east side.

Pacifica is a quiet little surfing community, very scenic with not a lot of commerce, but convenient to the city and all the big box stores over the hill. We love it here. Neighborhoods in the northern part of town (the Pacific Manor district) tend to be foggy, but Vallemar and Linda Mar are actually quite sunny... definitely sunnier than the Outer Richmond where I work. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Thanks, I'll give it some good consideration! This wouldn't be a daily (commuting) thing, but if we wanted to go into SF via public transit, would the BART Daly City station be the most convenient one to use? I'm just looking at a map, and it looks like either Colma or Daly City would be closest to Pacifica (BART appears to veer off towards San Bruno, etc. after that)? Is there good parking at those stations?

Yes, Daly City would be the most convenient BART station, and there is plenty of parking there.
