The closest thing to a regular beach near downtown/wharf would be at the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park (Aquatic Park). It's along Beach Street/west end of Jefferson. It's a bay beach so not much fun if you ask me. Crissy Field also has beach and it's bigger but again it's on the bay. Nice for watching the ships come in, playing games on the large grassy field but not for playing in the water.

The better beaches are on the ocean side. Baker beach is a nice beach with Golden Gate views. China Beach is a hassle to get to but tends to be a nice quiet beach. Ocean Beach is at the end of Golden Gate Park. It's huge, nice waves, though it's kinda far from the majority of the tourist attractions.

Ocen Beach may be fit for us as we are planning to spend some time in the GG park. The free shuttle rides in GGpark goes near the beach as well ?
