Did you ever find out how long the commute is from Pleasanton to Alameda. We are moving to the bay area in a few weeks, we'll be living in Dublin and my husband will be commuting to Alameda. I am still undecided on where to search for work as we have a 11 year old daughter that I dont want to miss out on because I'm sitting in traffic. So, can you tell me how long the commute is from those east bay cities (Dublin/Pleasanton) into Alameda during rush hour?

Thanks for your help...I appreciate it.

I've heard of worse. The main sticking point would be 880, which is a real bear. The alternative would be 980 to 580, but I don't like that either because 580 going through Oakland and San Leandro is one long string of sweeping bends and it doesn't strike me as particularly safe. In fact, it reminds me of a stretch of 101 in San Francisco that we call "Hospital Curve," but it goes on for miles.

I drive this part of 580 all the time and never thought of it as unsafe. While it is certainly not a straight road here, it is hardly so tight or twisty as to be unsafe - the bends are very broad and sweeping.

Well, you could get off at Fruitvale BART Station and wait in the "Transit Village" there for a bus. Though I have only gone there once or twice, I must say that it is not the best place to be if you are the only one there or if you work at night, despite the revitalization projects. I think it is fine as long as it is still daytime or during the morning and evening rush hour, but even then, I would NOT let my guard down.

Maybe you should reconsider renting in Dublin or Pleasanton. At least this way, only one person has to commute and you could save on commuting costs. You could also rent in Castro Valley.
