Default Where should I stay in SF?

I'm thinking of looking around the Bay area, and, possibly Silicon Valley, to see if there are opportunities. I know people who will drive me around, but I have decided to stay in a hotel for my visit.

Where should I stay? I would like a safe area, preferably near the downtown courthouse, but I would also seriously consider staying in Silicon Valley if there is a good hotel.

So where should I stay if I visit SF?

The ironic thing is that the area around the courthouse (Civic Center) isn't exactly the safest place to be, especially at night if you are not familiar with the surroundings. The other courthouse (Hall of Justice) is similarly located in a less than ideal area.

Try The Palace, historic property on Market Street 2-3 blocks from Union Square. Discount if you have a Rosewood card.

Near Civic Center, we always get a room at the Good Hotel. Very clean, new, eco-friendly, excellent value, and very friendly staff. Street is a little sketch at night, though. Hotel Adagio near Union Square has been a good choice as well.

I just recently stayed at a hotel in Civic Center/Tenderloin for a bachelorette party and it was great! It was the Serrano Hotel. Just a few blocks from the BART station and close to much of downtown (not sure exactly where the courthouse is, but if it's in the civic center area like someone mentioned, I'm sure it's close).

I didn't find the neighborhood to be too sketchy, and the only person who felt uncomfortable walking with our group at night was from Santa Barbara, but she gets paranoid about everything!

There is a restaurant attached to the hotel, and they have valet parking if you have a car. Nice view of the city from our room. Since it's a historic building, the lobby was gorgeous (and fit with our jazz era themed party). Rooms are a bit small compared to large chains, but we had 4 people in one room without any problems.

I really loved the Serrano Hotel. You should check it out!

Thanks for the input, everyone. My budget is $100 to $300 per night.

My concern, however, is what I've been hearing about the courthouses not being in safe areas. I don't want to set up in a war zone. One of my friends has suggested the El Rancho near the airport.

What about Silicon Valley? I would presume there would be safer areas, especially around the courthouse.
