Hi all, I need some advice.

I'm currently in negotiations with my employer regarding the possibility of relocating from Germany to either San Francisco or Boston. While I've never been to either city, the wife and I prefer SF mainly because of the weather.

Anyway, we'll be moving with a 3 month old baby and need to start looking at different areas we may be interested in living. As we're totally unfamiliar with the area I was hoping we could get some ideas from people that are.

Some of the key things we're looking for is:

- affordable (due to the high initial costs of international relocation, the lower the monthly rent the better)
- safe / low crime rate
- kid and family friendly
- easy access to public transit (I'd be commuting to Market Street every morning and, as I haven't been in the US in a long time, have no driver's license or car).

Also, any suggestions on a decent apartment finder website for the SF area would be awesome.

Many thanks in advance!

I'm not sure about San Francisco neighborhoods, but as far as looking for places try craigslist.

If you are looking to live out of the city Daly City (gloomy weather though) South San Francisco and Millbrae would be cheaper, I'm not sure on specific neighborhoods and safer but those towns all have a BART station so you can take that into the city, it stops in a few different stops along Market, not sure where your job will be but you might check if the Bart will stop within walking distance for you.

Check out Alameda. VERY family-friendly, affordable (by Bay Area standards), very easy commute to San Francisco via either ferry or Transbay bus. Weather's nice, too. It's safe, and we live here without a car.

Hmmmmm, not that I'm moving anytime soon, but glad to hear that life in Alameda without a car is doable.
