There are some nicer parts of town but Concord has long committed itself to lower middle and low income people. As another poster said the schools are below average with lots of behavioral problems. The local politicians are bought and paid for by any party who will toss them a couple of bucks. There aren't many well paying jobs in Concord itself but you have adequate access to jobs in San Francisco and along the 680 corridor.

It boils down to this. You get attracted to the area because of the more or less reasonably priced housing and the area seems nice when you first move there then it rapidly gets on your nerves. Most of the people you meet who talk about how great the area is are long time residents who are remembering how Concord was instead of how it is.

Concord would be something like Clairemont Mesa or Mira Mesa in SD except more Hispanics, it has that same middle to lower middle class feel with some nicer neighborhoods thrown in.
