...and why?

Bernal Heights
Cole Valley
Noe Valley
West Portal

This is just for fun. You could live anywhere within one of those areas. Pretend money is not a factor -- we're just going by atmosphere, amenities, microclimate, etc., other factors that would contribute to your choice.

Tough choice! I'd probably go for Noe Valley. (You did say money wasn't a factor.)

Bernal Heights is pretty quiet. If you have to drive to work then it might be a decent choice, a friend who used to live there said it was pretty easy to park, but if you want to walk everywhere being up on a hill is inconvenient. Cortland has some shops but not a lot. The nearby stretch of Mission has some decent places to eat though, and a Safeway.

Cole Valley is alright but doesn't have a lot going on, also I think it gets pretty foggy and windy compared with areas that are just a bit further east. If you want quiet then this might be the best choice, especially on the side streets, though Bernal Heights would do the trick too.

Noe Valley is pretty great and would be my choice if money was not an issue. It has a nice mix of highbrow and lowbrow places to drink and eat, and a Whole Foods right in the middle of it, and it's close to Dolores Park and the Castro and Mission which are more happening. Also BART isn't too far away which is a way better transit option than any Muni line.

West Portal is pretty decent, lots of old-school local restaurants and bars, and some local markets, but I wouldn't want to have to deal living under that fog every single day. Definitely feels like a neighborhood that the rest of the city forgot, though nearby Sunnyside exemplifies that quite a bit more.

If you are looking at these neighborhoods because they're generally upper-middle class areas without a lot of crime and with a decent but not crazy amount of stuff going on, I'd also add Glen Park, which has a great concentration of local restaurants and shops in a small area, and a BART station which again is really great for commuting.

Noe Valley. Cute, safe, good transit.

But for people that grew up in the City--Noe valley is not at all what in once was- It's where wealthy newbies from other places (with kids) flock to now. Yuck, not original or authentic SF at all, now days.

The state of the market all but precludes this possibility. An epic exercise in suspension of reality.
