During rush hour/business hours, this would be a commute going with traffic (580 westbound in the morning and 580 eastbound in the evening). If you had a lot of patience, it would still be a nightmare, in my opinion. If you had to do it, try working non-standard hours.

Tracy to CORTE MADERA?!?!?!?!

Might as well drive to Yosemite... Slight hyperbole.

You could drive to the Pleasanton BART station, take BART to the Embarcadero station in SF, then take a Golden Gate or Marin Transit bus to Corte Madera. Or, you could just take a ferry from either the Embarcadero or Jack London Square (near BART) in Oakland straight to Larkspur, but then you could cycle for another 2-3 miles on roads that aren't always so bike friendly.

My recommendation? See if you can work during off hours in the interim and, if you don't own a house, just ultimately move to Marin County and live a little more frugally. (This is assuming that the new job is permanent.)

I would rather stab myself in the eye than do that commute. Keep in mind it is about 70 miles.

This is when it's time to step back and re-evaluate. Look at the big picture. It's just not worth it.

Like the previous poster said, move to Marin and live frugally or look for another job. It's human nature to convince ourselves that it'll be fine. We can do it. It won't be that bad and it's worth it to live in the bay area!

Is it, really?

The time is one thing. The stress of having to deal with stop and go traffic for 20 hours per week is another animal. Like others have said, why not sell your Tracy pad and rent a smaller place in Marin County? Not only will your commute be much better, but overall, its a much better place to live. Sure, you won't have your McMansion, but there's more to life than just your house.

Fairfield or Santa Rosa or Windsor or, heck, even Cloverdale would be a better commute than Tracy. Unless you really have no other choice but to live in Tracy, find a place in Marin or Sonoma.

Holy Moses. That just might be the worst commute I've heard of. Would Santa Rosa be an option? I know Marin County is expensive, but the drive back to Tracy could take upwards of 3 hours on, say, a Friday afternoon.

BART will take you between Pleasanton and Richmond, but the most optimistic route I can find on 511.org says that getting to Corte Madera from Richmond takes an hour and a half on the GGT buses.
