Yea, $52K today is in very much in the "compromise" salary range. You'll have to give something up:
- Commute time for a 1BR or apartment all to yourself (live in FAR East Bay or over the Altamont pass);
- Privacy to be able to live closer to work or in a trendy neighborhood (depending on where, more than 1 roommate);
- Or a bit of both to live in a not-so-nice neighborhood.

Even a studio would be difficult on that salary.

You will need some idea of what your actual net pay will be. How many deductions from your salary.
I know somebody who gets by fine in SF on about $42 K a year salary....for the singular reason is that this person has lived in the same rent controlled apt in the upper Castro for the past 30 yrs

People are responding to both the old OP and the new OP above. It's getting a little confusing.

With a salary of 74K, that gives you about $6200/month gross. The rule of thumb for most landlords, is they want you to make 3 times the monthly rent. Not all follow this, but it's a good place to start.

So, 1/3 of your monthly gross income is about $2100/month. This is the max rent you should be looking to spend.

So, start searching on Craigslist for rentals max $2100 in South San Francisco, and the towns on the Peninsula.

If you are unsure of a particular neighborhood, come back and ask here.

This is a South SF search for max $2100 rent:

SF bay area apts/housing for rent - craigslist

To search the other towns on the peninsula, click on the "neighborhood" link on the left hand side on Craigslist.

Congrats on the job!

In the apartments they've lived in for 20+ years.

You want to explain your random statement of some mysterious people living in apartments for 20+ years, and how that applies to the current OP wanting to find somewhere to live and commute to South San Francisco?

Or is this just some kind of drive-by post?

They seem to be responding to the title of the thread "So where do the working class people live?". Their answer doesn't offer any help to the OP's actual question.
