Especially with car purchases. Be careful out there and use common sense.

I've never used craigslist for anything expensive. I've sold $50 pieces of computer hardware, or a $100 phone at the most, but a car?

Nooooo way.

I'm a bit dim today ... why can't robberies happen with newspaper ads?

I don't think anyone made that claim.

People are stupid when it comes to the Internet for some reason. Who gets into a car with close to ten grand in cash with someone they don't even know? Of course, it could happen, but for some reason people let their guard down on the Internet.

Some things shouldn't be CL'd.

I sold concert tix once and just did a hand off at a BART station, cash for tix. I also gave away a mattress, first come first served, and never even saw who took it since I had it out on the driveway the day I placed the ad (gone in a few hours).

I bought one thing off CL a few years ago. When we spoke on the phone the guy was actually a little apprehensive about giving me his address and tried to talk around it by telling me to park at the gas station across the street and he'd come out with it. But after a minute or so he decided I wasn't a threat and told me exactly where his townhouse was so I could park the car in front. My teenage son was with me and I didn't feel threatened at all but I think the seller was more scared than me. It does involve putting trust in fellow humans, which isn't always possible.

My daughter found a roommate on CL. She took two friends, a guy and a girl, with her to meet the girl and see the place. Safety first!

People need to be careful when they buy or sell large ticket items on craigslist. And people selling a $15k+ car on craigslist for $8500 should be your first clue it is too good to be true. I would never go to Oakland to buy a car off of craigslist that is just foolish.

Yeah I hate to say it, but when I look on Craigslist for something I want, I automatically glance over the stuff located in seedier parts of Oakland.

Don't want to sound racist but I buy and sell cars/motorcycles on CL all the time. Use of proper judgement is a must. Properly screen the guy and the situation. Sure anyone could be a criminal... but if the guy looks like a gang banger then run. If it's a Cal student then you can relax a little.
