I'm a So Cal native and for the past couple of years, my family has lived in NJ for a year and most recently Portland, OR for a year. We are anxious to get back to CA where everything is familiar and friends and family still live.

We are considering moving to either So Cal or Nor Cal. I have a possible job offer for a place in downtown SF but don't want to live in the city. I have two little ones - ages 5 and 2.5 so I will need to find a safe (no bars on the windows!), family friendly place to live where rent isn't outrageous (i.e. rent is no more than $2K for a 3 bedroom). Also, looking for a place to live that the public schools - at least the elementary ones are really good and there is a good choice of day cares in the area too for my youngest.

Also, looking for an easy commute - being from LA I'm used to nearly 2 hours each way - will that be the case in SF? I'll have to try to get home at a reasonable time to take care of the kiddos/fam.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Alameda. It''s safe; it has great schools; the commute to downtown SF is anywhere from 40 to 60 minutes, depending on whether you take the direct bus, or the ferry, or drive. And you can get a 3BR apartment for $2K. A detached house will run you a bit more.

Pleasant Hill and Southern Concord (off of Treat Blvd) might also work. Bart station nearby also (about 30-40 minutes into the City)

You'll likely want to take BART to a job in downtown S.F. I suggest a look at the BART system map at BART - Station List, and then using zillow.com or craigslist to get a feel for what rentals go for close to BART stations. Good luck!

Ditto Alameda for elementary, although there is no BART station. There is a ferry, but the ferry is expensive. You may want to consider Orinda for the school district too. There is a BART station there.

Alameda would work, so would my neighborhood North Berkeley (slightly under 30 minute BART commute to Downtown San Francisco).
